The fear of failure.

Spanish

“Si hablas a un hombre en un idioma que entiende, llegara a su cabeza. Si le hablas ensu idioma, llegara a su Corazon.”

“If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head.

If you talk to him in his language, that goes to his heart.”

Nelson Mandela

Our Philosophy

At Anfield Road Primary school we believe that the learning of a foreign language provides a valuable educational, social and cultural experience for our pupils. We want to nurture a lifelong passion and curiosity for languages and equip our pupils with vital skills to prepare them for future opportunities in our multicultural World.

Spanish is taught to all year groups in KS2 by our native Spanish language teacher focusing on all four key strands of language learning; speaking, listening, reading and writing. The kinaesthetic and varied nature of lessons ensure teaching and learning is fully inclusive to all learners.

Spanish Aims

  • To enrich our pupils’ curriculum and create an enjoyable atmosphere in which to learn a new language
  • To foster positive attitudes to language learning which will remain with our pupils throughout life
  • To nurture and develop skills required in future language learning
  • To add an international dimension to our children’s learning and provide an awareness of other languages and cultures
  • To develop the confidence to speak Spanish and promote the listening and understanding skills of each child
  • To encourage each child to read and write in the Spanish language

Links to the wider curriculum

Learning Challenge: Links are made between Spanish and our Learning Challenge Curriculum. For example; Learning about Spain’s role in World War, Spain and the Tudors and researching wild weather in Spanish speaking countries

Spanish Choir:  We have a Spanish choir and children are invited to come along and improve their language skills by learning Spanish songs.  The choir often performs alongside our school musicians at various events both in and out of school.

Fiesta Day: Each year in the Summer Term, the whole school celebrates with a Fiesta Day. During this day children build up their intercultural understanding of Spanish speaking countries, as well as develop their linguistic skills. The celebrations usually involve cookery, dancing, music and art.

Twitter: We have a dedicated Twitter account for MFL @AnfieldSpanish. Here our Spanish teacher, Señora Patri, enhances the language learning experiences by setting challenges, sharing facts and information as well as highlighting what the children have been doing.

Barcelona

Each year, our Year 6 children have the opportunity to bring their learning alive by travelling to Barcelona on a school residential. During the trip, the children visit important sites including: ‘La Sagrada Familia’, ‘Las Ramblas’ and ‘El Camp Nou’. In addition to experiencing the food, art and music of Barcelona, the children also have the chance to use their Spanish skills with native speakers.
