Our Approach to Teaching Reading: Read Write Inc. (RWI) Phonics

At Anfield Road Primary, we are committed to ensuring every child learns to read confidently and fluently. To support this goal, we use the Read Write Inc. (RWI) Phonics programme – a structured and systematic approach to teaching early reading and writing skills.

We use RWI Phonics from Reception through to Year 2, providing children with a strong foundation in phonics during these crucial early years of their education.

Developed by Ruth Miskin, RWI is designed to help children learn the sounds that letters make (phonics), how to blend those sounds into words, and to develop a love of reading. RWI Phonics is tailored to meet the needs of individual learners, ensuring that each child is supported at the right level.

Through RWI, children will:

  • Learn to read accurately and fluently
  • Develop strong comprehension skills
  • Build confidence in writing using phonics
  • Enjoy engaging and lively phonics lessons

Our trained staff deliver daily RWI sessions, and children are regularly assessed to ensure they are making progress and grouped appropriately. We also encourage reading at home and provide guidance for parents to support their child’s learning journey.

Together, we can help every child become a successful and enthusiastic reader.
