Miss Riley and Miss Carroll

At Anfield Road, we have a diverse community and a wide range of languages spoken at home by our children. It currently reaches a number of 32 languages! We have over 230 children who speak English as an additional language across school.

We value each individual and encourage each child to Aim High! Our language specialist teachers, Mrs Hughes and Mrs Adams, work together to ensure that al children, regardless of their home language, make good or better progress here at Anfield Road.

We ensure that all children, parents and carers are valued and included in our school community. We provide a welcoming atmosphere for newly arriving pupils from around the world and celebrate their backgrounds and cultures.

Our EAL (English as an additional language) children are assessed termly using the NASSEA assessment tool. This allows us to monitor pupils’ progress in the curriculum and their acquisition of English. The targets of each child are shared with their class teachers to ensure that quality first teaching takes place within their classes.

School of Sanctuary

We are proud that Anfield Road Primary is an accredited ‘School of Sanctuary’. A School of Sanctuary is a school that helps its students, staff and wider community understand what it means to be seeking sanctuary and to extend a welcome to everyone as equal, valued members of the school community. We are a school that is proud to be a place of safety and inclusion for all.

Language of the Month

There are 32 languages currently spoken in Anfield Road Primary School and we celebrate these languages through, ‘Language of the Month’. Each half term, we choose one of these languages and each class learns the basic phrases of that language such as hello, goodbye and thank you.

Here is a list of languages that we have celebrated so far this year:

Autumn 1- Romanian

Autumn 2- Urdu

Spring 1- Portuguese

Spring 2- Yoruba

Summer 1- Italian

Summer 2- Tamil

Check out our X (Twitter) page at @AnfieldRoadEAL to watch videos of our children using common phrases from these languages.

Language Ambassadors

At Anfield Road, we are so lucky to have a range of confident, bilingual Year 6 children. These children are chosen to be our Language Ambassadors for Year 6 and their role includes reading bilingual texts to the younger children, supporting our ‘new to English’ starters with their transition to school and supporting our Language of the Month celebrations.

EAL Coffee Mornings

Our school is a safe space where all children and their parents should feel safe and welcomed. To create this space, and bring our families together, we run termly coffee mornings where we invite all of our parents in for tea, coffee and a chance to chat.

We would love to see you at the next one!

Stories from Around the World

Lots of very brave came to school to read stories in languages such as Urdu, Polish, Romanian and Spanish. The event was a such a success and the children were so incredibly lucky to benefit from hearing stories in their home languages. The event was a huge success! The children loved it and we can’t wait to plan the next one.

Resources

A selection of our newest Mantra Lingua dual language books and a talking pen.

SOLA Arts Project

We were so lucky to have @SOLAARTS in to school to complete art projects with some of our families. The parents and children all really enjoyed it and the quality time they spent together.
